Crucial files of Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi & Vijay Mallya completely destroyed in major fire at Mumbai IT Office

A massive fire at the Income Tax (investigations) office at Scindia house, Ballard Estate has certainly, completely and totally destroyed important and sensitive files containing documents pertaining to scammers like Mallya, Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi of Gitanjali Gems, besides several other sensitive cases.

A senior IT official told IndiaScoops.com that all the crucial files and documents pertaining to several important cases including those of Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, Vijay Mallya and other big defaulters, both at the DRT and the IT office have been completely destroyed and it would take at least one year to recreate the files from backups and photo copies stored at different locations and offices of the IT department across the country. This means that the pending cases would be delayed by a year at the least, the official informed.

Scindia House is a multi-storey government building, located at Ballard estate near the Fort, in Mumbai. The building houses various government departments including the Income Tax (IT) department, Office of deputy director (investigations), the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT), and Cyber forensic lab. Such a sensitive building should have been fire-proof, but it did not even have basic fire-fighting equipment.

RTI activist Anil Galgali, who has obtained a number of documents under the sunshine law, told reporters that the fire may have been deliberately caused by vested interests. The fire was started by someone inside. Someone who had access to the storeroom where all the papers were kept.

A security guard, Abijit Pol, whose swift response helped save many lives, said, “Someone complained of a foul smell. When I went to check its source, I realized that the smell was emanating from a cabin, which was locked as the concerned official is on leave. Another guard and I broke the door and saw the room engulfed in flames,”Pol told Mumbai Mirror.

According to Mumbai Mirror, another DRT employee said that the presence of plywood in their offices could have caused the blaze to spread faster. “All documents from searches conducted by the department are stashed in the building on the same floor where the fire started. Things obtained during seizures and evidence gathered are also stocked here,” he added.

While the IT dept has claimed it could have backups of the documents at different locations, officials, on conditions of anonymity, said, “The department may not have a backup of most of the documents, and if destroyed, it might be difficult to recover them.” reports Mumbai Mirror.

The BCAF or Bharat Citizens Action Forum has asked the Central Government why there were no proper fire safety measures in a highly sensitive place. Such a place must be fire proof?

According a Tribune India report, files on absconding jeweller Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi apart from several others wanted for economic offences have been destroyed in a major fire at the premises of the Income Tax department on Friday, according to sources here.

The fire that broke out at the heritage Scindia House building in South Mumbai’s Ballard Estate area around 5 pm on Friday evening raged on till early Saturday. Fire Brigade officials said it was a Level 4 fire, which indicated a high-level of seriousness.

The fire covered around 12000 sq feet on the third, fourth and fifth floors of the five-storied building. Six people were rescued from the building.

“Many cupboards had fallen on the floors, and we opened them, we found that the papers and files inside were ablaze. It was time-consuming time to extinguish the fire. Each floor of the building is around 4000 sqft,” said a fire officer.

The fire brigade department said that dousing operation was challenging as the massive amount of files, paper and wooden work inside the premises became fodder to the fire. No casualties were reported, says Indiatimes.

The cause of the fire hasn’t been declared by the fire brigade, but activists smell sabotage as the main cause as the offices charred contained important files pertaining to the investigation into the Nirav Modi, Vijay Mallya, and Mehul Choksi cases. Police said the investigations are on.

“As the building housed the investigation cell of the Income Tax department, it had files and documents pertaining to cases that were being probed in Mumbai and Maharashtra,” said a senior Income Tax official. “They have all been burned. We are not authorized to divulge information about the documents and the cases we are probing. It will take us time to take the stock of the damage.”

Asked whether the department followed a standard operating procedure in such cases when a huge pile of sensitive evidence faced the risk of being destroyed, AA Shankar, Director General of Income Tax (Investigations), said, “There is one procedure, but I will talk about it later.”

“We are taking statements and investigating the cause of the fire,” said senior police inspector of MRA Marg police station Sukhlal Varpe, adding, “People say they saw a short circuit. We cannot comment on the intention of sabotage.”

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) which is the planning authority of Scindia House to carry structural audit before allowing the department to start working there again.

Surabhi Sharma, administrative officer of Scindia House, refused to comment as to where its offices be shifted to in the interim.

Besides Arbaaz Khan, 3 other Bollywood Superstars in IPL Betting Racket

Even as Bollywood actor and filmmaker Arbaaz Khan was being grilled by the Anti Extortion Cell of the Thane Crime Branch about his alleged role in the IPL betting case, the police are believed to have discovered the name of a leading superstar and at least 12 others from Bollywood in the red diary of arrested bookie Sonu Jalan aka Sonu Malad who is also associated with the Dawood Ibrahim gang and other international betting rackets.

Besides Arbaaz Khan, three other Bollywood superstars’ names have cropped up during the investigation. The police are trying to find a “definite link or connect” along with “evidence” in the form of call recordings or WhatsApp messages between the bookies and the Bollywood superstars before summoning them for questioning.

Sarkar movie producer Parag Sanghvi, CEO of Alumbra Entertainment & Lotus Film Company and former MD of media company K Sera Sera, has also has been called in for questioning.

Pradeep Sharma, senior inspector, Thane AEC said on Saturday, “Two Bollywood producers, Parag Sanghvi and Murad Khaitan’s names have cropped up. We will call them for questioning. Sanghvi was Jalan’s partner. A top bookie who is a Mumbai-based builder’s son, Dilip Ludhani, has also been named. We are probing further. We will call Khan again if needed.”

The IPL betting racket was busted last month by the Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) of the Thane Police’s Crime Branch. Jalan, who is reportedly one of the top bookies of the country, is believed to have close connections with Arbaaz Khan, said Pradeep Sharma of the AEC. Arbaaz had been asked to join the probe into the betting rackets of Jalan who was arrested for placing bets during IPL 2018.

The AEC team is confident that Arbaaz is not the only Bollywood celeb in the racket. The superstar whose name has been discovered in Jalan’s red diary has a big film in the making. Another big actor whose private life has gained him much notoriety is also named in the diary, according to reports in PeepingMoon.com. However, most of these betting transactions date back to IPL 2016 when Jalan was most active.

Of particular interest to the police are two matches of 2016 in which Jalan and his international network of bookies and punters were said to be heavily involved. According to the police, Jalan was not operating alone for these two matches. The entire D Company was involved. It is not known if Arbaaz, who was introduced to the bookie by a businessman named Hanif Khan, was also embroiled.

The next big fish likely to fall in the Thane Crime Branch’s net will be the big Bollywood superstar who is said to close to fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim claims PeepingMoon.com. Jalan’s betting operation was not restricted to the IPL alone. The bookie was also involved with the Pakistan Super League, the Caribbean Premier League, Big Bash League and Bangladesh Premier League, reports PeepingMoon.com.

Sr PI Pradeep Sharma, is heading the investigation and will call three big Bollywood producers and some financers also for questioning. Arbaaz Khan is just the tip of the iceberg. The police suspect he was heavily into betting and want to scrutinize his bank accounts. Arbaaz reportedly lost Rs. 2.80 crore to Rs 3 crore in bets. Since he did not pay up, the bookie started threatening and blackmailing him. The police claim to have photographic and electronic evidence implicating Arbaaz Khan in the case.

The 50-year-old actor told the police that he had been invited by Jalan to Delhi. Khan added the pictures of him with Jalan were clicked during his meeting with him.

The actor revealed that he was being blackmailed by Jalan using the recordings of his calls to him. Khan said that Jalan also used the recordings of phone calls and photos to force him to attend events for him, reports India Today.

The police said that the actor placed bets over the phone. Khan, however, denied that he took money from the bets that he placed through Jalan. Incidentally, Khan and Jalan got into a spat last year after the latter asked him to pay Rs 2.75 crore for bets he had lost on cricket matches.

According to the statement, Khan told Jalan that he had never shown any balance sheets or accounts regarding the bets. Khan’s enquiry about the Rs 2.75 crore led to an argument between the two parties. The actor, however, admitted that he had won another bet last year and it was because of this win their dispute was settled says the India Today report.

In the recent past, Jalan had similarly blackmailed an Enforcement Directorate officer who was posted in Gujarat. The officer, who is facing corruption charges, is currently being questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Jalan, who was adept with technology, would record videos of officers and some celebrities. He even laid honey traps during his meetings with these officers and celebrities and used female models to trap his clients. He has a network of female models who work for him, either as tippers or ‘marketing agents’ to rope in clients. Many of these models also moonlight as high class escorts and call girls and trap clients into placing bets through Jalan. At least 3 South actresses who reside in Mumbai are part of the racket.

Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s aides Raees Farooqui and Anil Tunda had met Jalan in the past. Both Farooqui and Tunda are known for operating Dawood’s betting syndicate.

Jalan has been active in the betting circuit for the past 16 years. According to the police, a former police officer guided Jalan. In 2011, Jalan had honeytrapped another senior police officer.

The police will examine Jalan’s bank accounts and email accounts. According to the police, Jalan ran an auto parts business to conceal his dealings. The police have extended remand of Jalan till June 6.

While the website Bet and Take is shut, the police is examining its server to find out the number of those who accessed it online and through its mobile application or app.

Over the years, Jalan has bought properties worth crores in Mumbai. Recently, he purchased three flats amounting to Rs 10 crore. He presently, lives in a 3500 sq flat in western suburbs of Malad.

Gehana Vasisth might be the first contestant confirmed for Bigg Boss 12

Bigg Boss season 11 was quite interesting and with an interesting set of contestants, the controversies around them were also quite interesting. Everyone is eagerly waiting for season 12 of the controversial reality show to return soon.

And though during Season 11, the fights set in from Day 1, there were a lot of interesting revelations made by Gehana Vasisth. From claiming Arshi Khan to be married to a 50-year-old man to alleging that Bandgi Kalra was a divorce, from revealing that Shilpa Shinde and Vikas Gupta were ex-lovers to calling Priyank Sharma a male escort, Gehana doled out some interesting scoops and ripped apart the Bigg Boss 11 contestants time and again.

And while she was such an interesting character, she was touted to enter the house as a wild card contestant. Though she did not enter the house this season, it is being said that the makers are saving the south actress for the next season.

While Gehana had claimed that the makers did not have a big budget for the show and that is why the quality of housemates was such, turns out the low budget was one reason why Gehana did not enter the house. Revealing the truth behind Gehana Vasisth not entering the house, Bhojpuri actress Mahima Singh Puri had claimed that, “Gehana Vasisth who is doing very well in the South had demanded Rs 1 crore to stay in the madhouse and take on Arshi Khan. But the makers did not have such a budget this season, so they are holding back Gehana Vasisth and saving her as the star attraction for season 12.”

Though Gehana has not commented on the matter or confirmed the same, her manager, Suresh Shetty said there were some financial issues due to which the deal could not be worked out. But if Gehana would have entered the house, watching her and Arshi Khan under one roof would have been a visual treat.

Now let us see if the south actress makes it to the Bigg Boss Season 12 or are the rumours just a false alarm.

Bigg Boss and Dus Ka Dum will compete with each other on the TRP charts: Salman Khan

After a successful season of Bigg Boss, Salman Khan is ready to take the small screen by storm with Dus Ka Dum season 3. The show premieres on June 4th and while interacting with media Salman Khan not only played the game with a few journalists but also replied to their queries in his trademark style.

Dus Ka Dum 3 is a an interactive game show where host Salman Khan asks the contestants, primarily commoners about the most general questions and convert them into statistics. Salman Khan will be heard asking the familiar question ‘Kitne pratishath bhartiye…’ once again on the show.

The channel is confident about cashing on Salman Khan’s popularity on the small screen and we also have no doubts about it. But will Dus Ka Dum 3 will be able to beat to Bigg Boss 12 when the TRP numbers come out since both the shows are being aired on rival channels. Salman Khan has no favourite here and said,  “I wish Bigg Boss and Dus Ka Dum keep on beating each other on TRP charts,”

He has been hosting Bigg Boss for many seasons now, so when asked him which Bollywood actor could step into his shoes for hosting the show in any contemporary. Salman gave a very diplomatic answer and named all his friends in the fraternity. Bhaijaajn said, “Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt can host Dus Ka Dum other than me”

Keeping his cool while answering all the questions, Salman Khan had an epic reaction when quizzed about Race 3 trailer being trolled on social media. His first song as a lyricist for ‘Selfish’ was also not spared by harsh comments but it doesn’t affect the superstar at all. He said, “People with two or three followers are not trolls”

Apart from ‘Dus Ka Dum 3’, Salman Khan has ‘Race 3’ releasing on June 15th 2018 and will soon begin shooting for Ali Abbas Zafar’s next ‘Bharat’ with Priyanka Chopra and Disha Patani.

“Those who eat beef should be hung in public”, fame Sadhvi Saraswati will not be coming to Goa this time

The All India Hindu Convention or Hindu Conclave to be held in Goa on June 4 will offer special prayers for Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who is currently undergoing advanced treatment for pancreatic cancer in a US hospital.

The event had hit the headlines in 2017 after Madhya Pradesh-based Sadhvi Saraswati in her speech at the Goa convention said that those who eat beef should be hung in public. There was a hue and cry in the State and several Ministers had to openly assure the populace that there would be no ban on beef in Goa.

Ramesh Shinde, national spokesperson of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, which is organising the event distanced himself from the comments. Saraswati will not be attending this edition of the event, sources said, adding that she has not been invited.

“Goa Chief Minister is of clean character and principled. Unfortunately, he is grappling with some health issues. So we will offer special prayers and good wishes for his health,” one of the convenors of the event Charudatta Pingale told reporters on Friday at a press conference in Panaji.

“A lot of respectable personalities are attending the convention,” Pingale added.

Parrikar has been undergoing treatment at a New York-based health facility since March 2018.

The Goa event is expected to see the attendance of 650 participants from 180 Hindu organisations coming from 19 states, as well as from Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

The convention will discuss what is termed the failure of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government in resolving issues related to Hindus, including enacting a law to ban cow slaughter, said Pingale.

Stop eating Pork & Beef, embrace Hindutva or else leave India: Swami Maharaj to Christians

According to media reports a hard-line Hindu group has called on Christians to be thrown out of India and stamped on images of Pope Francis while accusing him of promoting terrorism in a video being circulated on social media since May 25.

The video shows controversial Hindu leader Om Swami Maharaj with a group of about 20 people carrying placards and banners with pictures of Pope Francis not far from Sacred Heart Cathedral in New Delhi.

Last year Sadhvi Saraswati made a controversial statement at a Hindu Conclave in Goa saying Goans must either stop eating beef in Goa or go to Portugal.

Om Maharaj made a speech before members of the group began stamping on the Pope’s image. During his speech, he accused Indian Christians of promoting terrorism and Maoism in the country and demanded they should leave India, according to a report by ucanews.com.

If Christians don’t leave India, Maharaj said, they will use force to expel them. “We have our own ways to expel them if they don’t fall in line,” he said, adding that Christians must stop eating beef and pork if they want to continue living in India. This is not the first time, Swami Om has brought up this issue. The small-time thief and TV reality show participant who can go to any extent for publicity and self-promotion, had on two earlier occasions claimed that Christians must stop eating beef and pork and even called on Muslims in India to completely give up beef from their diet or go to Pakistan.

Maharaj spread a banner featuring a picture of the Pope on the road and then, with several others, stamped on it. Slogans of “Pope Francis murdabad” (Down with Pope Francis) were shouted. It is not known if the police intervened or if any police case has been filed yet.

The media has otherwise been very mum on this issue, possibly because Swami Om is a known attention-seeker and trouble maker.

The video has caught the attention of Christian groups in central India, prompting them to approach the police to stop the video’s circulation. At the time of writing this report, the police are looking into the complaints.

Richard James, spokesman for the Rashtriya Isai Mahasangh, the ecumenical national Christian forum based in Madhya Pradesh, said the police have been alerted to the video.

“This kind of public display of hate toward any religious group or leader would not be allowed in a civilized society,” James told ucanews.com.

Jaideep Prasad, inspector general of Police in state capital Bhopal, told ucanews.com that his officers “will not allow anyone to spread discord among people with such videos.”

Madhya Pradesh is among states governed by the pro-Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“I have already instructed officials to do what is necessary to ensure peace,” said Prasad on May 29.

Not just Swami Om, several other BJP leaders have upped the ante against Christians over the last one year.  Subramanian Swami, a BJP parliamentarian, moved a bill last year seeking capital punishment for cow slaughter since the animal is revered by a section of Hindus. He has continued to argue that cow slaughter should be tried as murder.

His plea was heard by CJI J S Khehar and Justice D Y Chandrachud hours after they had dealt with a serious issue like Right to Privacy.

Swami Om who claimed to have 50 crore followers globally had filed a petition about the selection of the CJI. When the judges asked him why he didn’t raise the question earlier, Swami Om replied that he had been petitioning the President and Vice-President for over a year. “I have been agitating the matter since your appointment,” Om Baba told the CJI in Hindi, causing an eruption of laughter.
